Comparing supermarket strawberries
Food reviewer Becca, known online as 'beccaeatseverything', set out to discover whether pricier strawberries taste better. She bought packs from Aldi, Tesco and Waitrose and tasted them in a TikTok video.
"Let's conduct a little experiment," Becca said. "I have got the cheapest, most expensive, and mid-price strawberries from the supermarket. So let's try them and see which one tastes the best."
Aldi – £1.19
Starting with the cheapest, Becca held up a pack of 'wonky' strawberries from Aldi. She noted Aldi also offers a 99p version but it was sold out. Upon tasting, she declared it "the most perfect strawberry I have ever seen in my life", baffled that it was labelled wonky.
"It's juicy, it's got a sweetness, there's a little bit of tartness, but there's a good flavour," she said. "They are not the sweetest strawberries I've ever had, but they've got a lot of flavour and for the price, I'm impressed." She awarded them nine out of ten, adding: "That's gonna be hard to beat."
Tesco – £2.70
The mid-range option was a pack of Tesco British strawberries costing £2.70 (or £2.50 online). Becca was immediately disappointed, calling them "tasteless".
"They might look really red and plump and juicy, but they do not taste it," she said. "They are watery." She acknowledged different varieties have different flavour profiles but found these lacking. "It has a bit of a sweeter taste, but not in like a nice strawberry sweet taste. It more just tastes like sort of sugar water."
Waitrose – £4
For the most expensive option, Becca chose Waitrose No.1 speciality strawberries at £4. She picked 'the most perfect looking strawberry' and was impressed. "Now that is what a strawberry tastes like," she declared.
"Genuinely, when you think of strawberry-flavoured things, this is the taste," she said. "They got bite to them, they are juicy, they're a little bit sweet, but they've also got that nice tartness that [a] strawberry should have." She scored them nine out of ten, matching Aldi's score.
However, Becca noted her scores were based on value relative to flavour. She argued that at £1.19, the Aldi strawberries were 'absolutely banging' and incredible value. But for overall taste, the Waitrose berries came out on top. "However, they are really expensive and so therefore, they have to jump through a few more hoops to get those higher scores. And it's done that," she explained.
