History and Architecture
Built in the 1220s by the 6th Earl of Chester, the castle was maintained until the 16th century when it was abandoned as unsuitable for military use. It was later used during the English Civil War and partially demolished in 1646 on Oliver Cromwell's orders.
Perched on a rocky crag, the ruins overlook rolling fields. A footbridge leads through the entrance, where visitors can explore remains and walk along stone walls. The castle also has England's deepest castle well, rumored to hide Richard II's lost treasure from 1399, though it hasn't been found.
Attractions and Activities
The site has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and a replica roundhouse is on display. The Castle of the Rock exhibition delves into its history. Until August 31, families can take on Channel 4's Taskmaster challenge, collecting score cards and spotting rubber ducks.
Walking routes through surrounding woodland offer chances to see foxes, rabbits, and peregrine falcons. The Sandstone Café serves drinks, snacks, cream teas, and cakes, with picnic tables available. The café is open without castle admission.
