A collection of 40 archive photographs captures generations of children playing on the streets of Merseyside, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the past. Courtesy of Mirrorpix, many of these images have not been seen for decades and serve as a reminder of how much life in the city has changed.
Before social media, smartphones and games consoles, children would head outside to play, often using their imagination to turn everyday objects into a source of entertainment. Some of the more striking photos show children playing among demolished housing estates, swinging around lampposts and making games out of tyres.
A Window into Liverpool's Past
Taken between the 1940s and the 2000s, the photographs offer a fascinating window into Liverpool's history, documenting not only how children spent their free time but also how the city's streets and neighbourhoods have evolved over the decades. For many, these images will bring back fond memories of growing up and playing out until the streetlights came on.
Among the highlights are scenes from across the region: a group of boys sitting on a wall in Croxteth in August 1982, children cooling off in Southport's yachting pool during a heatwave on 16th August 1973, and a child swinging round a lamppost on the streets of Liverpool.
Playgrounds and Local Landmarks
The gallery also includes images from parks and playgrounds, such as children enjoying the sun on West Kirby beach on 29th July 1999, and youngsters playing at the adventure playground at Calderstones Park in the Allerton area of Liverpool on 30th July 1991. Other photos show children playing at St Andrew's Gardens, aka the Bullring housing estate in Liverpool, in January 1974.
Some images capture notable moments, including a thumbs up from Paul White, who wrote to the Queen in 1981 asking for help in renovating the run-down council yard in Douglas Place, Bootle. The Queen passed his letter on to the Department of the Environment and, via the Playing Fields Association, the ground was given a hard surface, new play equipment and a wall mural stretching 50 years at a cost of more than £3,000.
Football and Community Life
Football features prominently, with images including Liverpool's young teen sensation Robbie Fowler playing football with six-year-old Scott in the street on 14th November 1994, youngsters playing outside Goodison Park on 23rd June 1995, and a children's football match in progress near the Union hotel on Sandhill Lane, Liverpool, on 30th January 1996.
The gallery also documents community events, such as a New Year Party at Hardy Street, Garston, Liverpool, on 1st January 2000, and a beach party at St Margaret's school playing fields for children who could not make it to the beach, in Toxteth on Saturday 17th August 1996.
