11 Foods Loved by the Royal Family — Including Queen's Daily Sandwich

When it comes to the Royal Family, you may expect them to constantly be eating in luxury, and while this is certainly true occasionally, on a day-to-day basis, their choice of food is somewhat more basic. Over the years, the royals, or those who have worked for them, have opened up about their favourite foods.

From the late Queen Elizabeth II's daily sandwich to Meghan Markle's favourite breakfast dish, the royals' choice of daily meals may not be quite as different to your own as you may expect.

Jam Pennies

Queen Elizabeth II ate jam penny sandwiches almost every day for over 90 years. On YouTube, former royal chef Darren McGrady revealed the late monarch's love of these afternoon snacks, as he said: "The Queen was served jam pennies in the nursery as a little girl; she’s had them for afternoon tea ever since. Simple, just bread and jam with a little butter – usually strawberry jam." He added: "We’d make the jam at Balmoral Castle with the gorgeous Scottish strawberries from the gardens."

Plain Porridge with Honey

Queen Camilla's love of porridge was revealed by her son Tom Parker Bowles in his recipe book Cooking and the Crown, where he wrote: "In winter, my mother, Queen Camilla, eats porridge every day - plain, aside from a little of her own honey." The honey comes from the beehives at Camilla's Ray Mill House, and is sold at Fortnum & Masons, with much of the proceeds going to charity.

Potted Shrimp on Toast

Queen Elizabeth II had a particular taste for fish and was a fan of Morecambe Bay potted shrimp on toast, another dish revealed by Darren McGrady. In a YouTube clip he said: "They’re cooked and marinated in this secret spicy butter and then the Queen would have them with warm toast, and when you spread them on the warm toast, the butter melts."

Cheesy Baked Eggs

Back in 2020, Clarence House shared a recipe from their kitchen, one that is beloved by King Charles - cheesy baked eggs. Posting a picture of the eggs to Instagram at the time, Clarence House wrote: "The Prince [of Wales at the time] has also shared one of his favourite recipes, Cheesy Baked Eggs, which can be made by using any number of our great British cheeses."

Eggs Suzette

Another fan of eggs was Princess Diana, whose go-to was eggs suzette, according to Darren McGrady. He said: "Egg Suzette - you can see why it was one of Princess Diana's favourites. She requested it at least once a week. She loved that poached egg on top, a little hollandaise sauce and some spinach on the bottom."
