iPhone 17 Pro Captures Stunning Image Inside Ancient Rock on Kangaroo Island
In a remarkable display of modern technology meeting ancient landscapes, Australian photographer Jon McCormack has captured a striking image using an iPhone 17 Pro inside a hollowed-out rock on Kangaroo Island. The photograph, taken at sunset, showcases the graphic simplicity of a suspended stone form overlooking the Southern Ocean, with the horizon and rock opening creating a disorienting yet captivating composition.
A Unique Island Ecosystem and Geological Wonder
Kangaroo Island, which separated from mainland Australia around 10,000 years ago, is home to unique wildlife such as the soot-coloured dunnart and kangaroos, with a population ratio of 14 kangaroos per person. On its far southern edge lie the Remarkable Rocks, granite formations carved by wind, rain, and salt over millennia. McCormack climbed inside one of these boulders to photograph the scene, describing it as a place that feels both ancient and exposed, shaped by weather and isolation.
McCormack's Vision and Photographic Journey
Born in Western Queensland and now residing in northern California, Jon McCormack has spent the last decade photographing patterns in nature across seven continents. His new book, Patterns: Art of the Natural World, published by Damiani this month, reflects his goal to help people see nature as a wondrous, intricate, and endlessly creative work of art. He aimed for this image to be visually striking and slightly disorienting, encouraging viewers to look more carefully and stay engaged with the scene.
McCormack expressed relief at capturing the shot without his phone falling into the sea, highlighting the challenges of photographing in such exposed locations. The image serves as a testament to the power of smartphone photography in capturing the beauty and complexity of natural environments, blending art and technology to inspire a deeper appreciation for the world's wonders.
