American higher education institutions are facing an unprecedented security crisis as violent pro-Palestine protests force multiple prestigious universities to shut down campuses and switch to remote learning.
Ivy League Grounds Paralyzed
Columbia University, the epicentre of the escalating situation, has taken the drastic step of moving all classes online after what officials described as "harassing and intimidating" behaviour from protesters. The Manhattan-based institution now resembles a fortified compound with NYPD officers maintaining a strong presence around the perimeter.
University President Minouche Shafik stated: "I am deeply saddened by what is happening on our campus. Our bonds as a community have been severely tested in ways that will take time to repair."
Coast-to-Coast Campus Turmoil
The unrest has spread far beyond New York, with the University of Southern California cancelling its main-stage graduation ceremony entirely. This comes after the university faced controversy earlier in the week when it barred a valedictorian from speaking at the commencement over alleged security concerns related to the Middle East conflict.
Meanwhile, the University of Michigan is bracing for potential disruption as it prepares to host Israeli President Isaac Herzog, while the University of Texas at Austin saw tense standoffs between law enforcement and demonstrators.
Mass Arrests and Mounting Tensions
The situation reached boiling point at New York University where over 120 protesters were taken into custody after police moved in to clear an encampment. Similar scenes unfolded at Yale University, where approximately 45 activists were arrested while blocking traffic.
At Emerson College in Boston, the confrontation turned particularly violent with police deploying pepper spray against protesters, leaving four officers injured in the clashes.
