A viral discussion on British parenting forum Mumsnet has highlighted some of the most cringeworthy job interview blunders, offering a cautionary tale for job seekers. The thread, kicked off by a user sharing a 'horrifying' story, has attracted numerous accounts of disastrous interviews.
One candidate reportedly referred to people with learning disabilities as 'mentals' during an interview at a disability-focused organisation, insisting he wanted to help them because he was 'sure they're not stupid'. After being rejected, he sent numerous emails insisting he should have been hired.
Other blunders include a candidate falling asleep mid-interview, and another lying about fluency in Mandarin only to be caught out when the interviewer greeted them in the language. A Zoom interview saw a candidate's camera pointed at her chest; when asked to adjust it, she snapped that she 'couldn't help that'.
In another virtual interview, a university graduate added her mother to the call and asked the interviewer to let her join. One candidate kept their camera off, claiming it was broken, but accidentally switched it on at the end, revealing they were in their dressing gown.
When asked for an interesting fact, one candidate replied: 'I'm not interesting at all. I'm actually really boring.' Despite the blunders, one person accidentally told their interviewer 'I love you' and still got the job.
