HomeToGo's European Hidden Gem Index has placed Beaumaris in the top 10 of 50 underrated European destinations. The index assessed locations based on climate, accommodation prices, dining options, and natural scenery.
Architecture and landscape
The town boasts a mix of medieval, Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian architecture. HomeToGo described it as an ideal destination for those enchanted by rugged shorelines, medieval castles, and boat trips to wild islands. Beaumaris is located on Anglesey, which The Telegraph named Britain's finest island, and achieved a 9.48 out of 10 rating for its landscape.
Beaumaris Castle, a World Heritage Site, was built between 1295 and 1330. Although never finished, it is considered a masterpiece and one of the finest Edwardian castles in Wales, celebrated for its near-perfect symmetry.
Activities and attractions
Beyond the castle, the town sits on the banks of the Menai Strait. Boat trips with Sea Coast Safaris offer views of Victorian jetties, Millionaires Row, and The Swellies, known as the most dangerous stretch of the Menai Strait. Puffin Island (Ynys Seiriol) is also nearby, serving as a protected sanctuary for seabirds and Atlantic grey seals.
Beaumaris Beach, with its sand and shingle shoreline, provides views across the Menai Strait and Eryri. The nearest railway station is Bangor, with a direct bus service to Menai Bridge.
