Maths Teacher Receives Two-Year Teaching Ban Following Drunken Racecourse Incident
Declan Sealy, a 45-year-old maths teacher previously employed at Dixons Brooklands Academy in Wythenshawe, Manchester, has been banned from the teaching profession for two years after a disciplinary panel ruled his actions were "reckless." The misconduct stemmed from an incident at Chester Races on July 1, 2023, where Sealy consumed approximately ten pints of alcohol, bit a bouncer on the thumb, and assaulted two police officers.
Criminal Convictions and Sentencing
In January 2024, Sealy was convicted at Chester Magistrates Court on multiple charges, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assault by beating of an emergency worker, and being drunk and disorderly. He received a 30-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, along with 25 days of rehabilitation activity and 200 hours of unpaid work per charge. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £600 in compensation to the victims.
Details of the Altercation
The Teaching Regulation Agency misconduct hearing revealed that Sealy bit the bouncer for around 20 seconds, stopping only after police officers used CS gas (a type of tear gas) to subdue him. During the arrest, he caused injuries to the officers, including cuts to a knuckle and hand. The panel noted that while scratches might be explained by arrest circumstances, the prolonged bite constituted a "significant violent act" not justified by extreme duress.
Panel's Ruling and Professional Consequences
The disciplinary panel determined that Sealy's decision to attend the event and consume excessive alcohol was "reckless," breaching teaching standards such as showing respect for others and upholding fundamental British values like the rule of law. Despite his previously "unblemished" record and character references describing him as a "wonderful father" and respected rugby coach, the panel expressed concern that the violence could transfer to the classroom. As a result, he is prohibited from teaching in any school, sixth form college, youth accommodation, or children’s home in England for two years.
Personal Fallout and Background
Neighbours in Heald Green, Stockport, expressed shock at the incident, revealing that Sealy has since split from his wife and lost his teaching position. They described him as a "nice guy" involved in charity work and rugby coaching at Didsbury Old Bedians RUFC, where he was considered a senior and respected member. Sealy, who has since decided to abstain from alcohol, admitted to the offences in a statement of agreed facts. The hearing also noted he was "chronically exhausted" with little sleep before the event, and he had two previous cautions from 2003 and 2007 for similar alcohol-related arguments.
