St Anselm's College in Birkenhead is celebrating a third consecutive set of record-breaking GCSE results. Many Year 11 students at the school received top grades, with one student securing straight 9s.
Across the country, 16-year-olds collected their GCSE results following exams in May and June. At St Anselm's near Birkenhead Park, students and parents braved torrential rain to collect their results.
Record-breaking performance
The Roman Catholic boys' school achieved its best results for the third year running. The class of 2026 recorded the highest Attainment 8 score in the college's history, with 41% of grades awarded at Grades 7–9.
Among the high achievers was Vasile Mateescu, who achieved an extraordinary set of straight Grade 9s. Other notable results came from John Chan, Malachy Cubbin, Luke Fisher, and Chimemelie Okeke, who each secured almost straight 9s with one 8 each. David Ebewele also achieved a strong set of results, including five 9s and four 8s.
Headteacher praises students
Speaking to the ECHO, the school's headteacher Mrs Cubbin said: "I am delighted to celebrate with our fabulous Year 11 students. I am most delighted because our students haven't just excelled academically this year but they've turned out as well rounded young adults both on the sporting arena, being national champions in athletics and cross country, and of course the Cheshire Cup rugby winner as well."
She added: "Our students have worked tirelessly throughout the year, they've shown amazing resilience, determination, and real grit, giving 100% every single day and pushing themselves harder. I could not be prouder of them today."
Other Wirral schools celebrate
Elsewhere in Wirral, The Birkenhead Park School's headteacher Mrs Dawes celebrated the school's results, saying: "Results day is always incredibly special because behind every grade is a young person who has worked hard, overcome challenges and taken another step towards their future."
She added: "I am immensely proud of our Year 11 students and everything they have achieved. They have shown determination, resilience and ambition, and today is about celebrating them and the opportunities their results will now open up."
Mrs Dawes also said: "The Birkenhead Park School has been transformed, but our ambition has not changed. We want every young person who comes through our doors to believe they can achieve more than they ever thought possible. These results demonstrate what can happen when students experience excellent teaching, high expectations and staff who genuinely believe in them. I would also like to thank our staff for their extraordinary commitment and our parents and families for everything they have done to support our students."
Birkenhead School also celebrated an excellent set of GCSE results, with well over half of all grades awarded at the highest levels of 7-9. Tom Whitworth, Head of Seniors at Birkenhead School, said: "We are incredibly proud of our students and the results they have achieved.
