Free bus travel is available for certain groups in England and Wales. If you're unsure whether you qualify, the criteria for free bus passes have been outlined.
Changes to Bus Fares
Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced major changes to bus travel last month, with fares set to be cut by up to a third from January. Single bus tickets will be capped at £2 from January 1, 2027.
Mr Burnham said: "Good, affordable transport links are an essential. No one should be priced out of those and left behind." He added: "Lower fares will help people get to where they need to – giving them breathing space to help with the cost of living."
Who Qualifies for Free Travel?
While bus fares are dropping next year, some people will be able to travel for free. In the UK, two types of free bus passes exist, aimed at supporting those who may struggle with transport costs.
Older people in England can obtain a bus pass upon reaching State Pension age, currently 66 for both women and men. In Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, applications can be made from age 60. London residents can also get free bus travel from 60, including complimentary travel on trains and other public transport.
Age UK advises checking with your local council for other discounts, saying: "It's a good idea to check with your local council to see what help is available."
Disabled Person's Bus Pass
England doesn't have a centralised provider for disabled person's bus passes. You'll need to contact your local council to establish eligibility and submit an application. On Merseytravel's website, it explains that you may qualify if you meet conditions in any of seven categories of disability defined by the Transport Act 2000.
The seven categories are: blind or partially sighted, profoundly or severely deaf, without speech, walking difficulties, without the use of both arms, learning disability, and medical fitness affecting ability to drive or hold a licence. The Department for Transport defines a learning disability as "a state of arrested or incomplete development of mind which includes significant impairment of intelligence and social functioning."
