The Office of National Statistics (ONS) has released the most popular baby names for girls in Wales for 2025, based on birth registration data. Olivia retained the top spot with 140 newborns given the name, followed by Lily (116), Elsie (106), and Mali (104). Welsh names such as Mali, Alys, Anwen, Eira, Eleri, and Elsi also featured prominently in the top 100.
Olivia’s Continued Dominance
Olivia has been the most popular girls' name in Wales since 2024, and has held the top position for most of the 2000s to the 2020s, except in 2023 when it dropped to second behind Isla. The name is of Latin origin, meaning 'olive tree'. The ONS noted that Olivia was also the most popular girls' name in three out of nine regions in England.

According to ONS data, the top ten most common names for baby girls in Wales last year were: Olivia, Lily, Elsie, Mali, Lottie, Freya, Harper, Florence, Evelyn, and Amelia. The rankings use exact spellings from birth registrations, so similar names with different spellings were counted separately.

In addition to the top 10, other Welsh names in the top 100 include Alys (ranked 44th), Mabli (55th), Ffion (72nd), Seren (78th), Eira (86th), Efa (90th), Elsi (92nd), Eleri (107th), Lowri (115th), Anwen (127th), and others.
