School Community Celebration

Pupils and staff celebrated the positive report at the end of term. Ms Lawson said: 'We are absolutely delighted with this report, which reflects the hard work, dedication, shared vision and values of our entire school community. Our young people are at the heart of everything that we do and it's fantastic to see their efforts, enthusiasm and pride in St John Ogilvie High formally recognised by the inspectors.'

She added: 'This success was made possible by the commitment of our staff and the invaluable support from our parents and carers, which will allow us to continue to build on this great report and help us deliver the very best outcomes for every single one of our young people.'

Key Strengths Identified

A team of inspectors visited the 1200-pupil school and identified several strengths, including staff collaboration, use of data, and ongoing professional learning. The school's work on wellbeing and breaking down barriers to learning was highlighted, and pupils were described as 'very respectful, keen to learn and excellent ambassadors for their school'.

The report made special note of the school's 'sophisticated, bespoke' tracking tool to monitor progress, 'sector-leading' distributed leadership opportunities for staff, and its parent partnership strategy, which includes events such as a family learning programme for S4, a numeracy project called You and Me, and the school's barista breakfast.

Equity and Wellbeing Initiatives

St John Ogilvie High's work on equity was also shared, including its 'highly effective' School Shouldn't Cost campaign, which makes all school-related activities free and has raised attainment. Pupils have shared this project nationally. The school's innovative wellbeing work includes the School State of Mind podcast and the 'Ogilvie, how are you really?' social media page.

The report noted: 'Young people make significant contributions to the positive ethos and culture of high aspiration' through leadership roles and projects such as working towards eco flag status, digital skills, fundraising for the local foodbank, and engaging with MSPs.

Inspectors stated: 'Young people and staff, as well as parents and partners, are very proud of their school. They feel a strong sense of belonging to the school community. Young people flourish in a caring, nurturing and supportive environment [and] are motivated to give of their best, behave responsibly and respect the wellbeing of others.'

'Senior leaders work very effectively with the school community to foster a calm, supportive and aspirational learning environment for all young people, [who] are courteous, caring and behave responsibly.'

Attainment and Learning Experiences

Inspectors praised attainment in literacy and numeracy, pupils' digital skills, and project-based learning experiences including film production, beekeeping, and refereeing.

South Lanarkshire executive director of education Lyndsay McRoberts welcomed the report, saying: 'This report really is sector-leading and will be one of the best across Scotland. It highlights the extremely hard work of Lorna Lawson and her dedicated team. Her leadership skills are reflected by the inspectors who also highlighted the respect and pride that the pupils clearly have for their school. The ethos and work ethic of the school clearly ensures that St John Ogilvie delivers the very best for all its pupils.'
