Newcastle and Durham Rank Among UK's Most Beautiful Universities

Newcastle University and Durham University have been named among the most beautiful universities in the UK, according to a new study by Canvas Student. Newcastle placed third, while Durham came sixth, surpassing several prestigious institutions including the University of Edinburgh and the University of Sheffield.

Study Methodology and Rankings

The rankings were determined by analyzing social media popularity (Instagram and TikTok posts), campus size, and the quality of green spaces in the surrounding area. Newcastle University, despite a relatively modest social media presence with 141,432 posts across Instagram and TikTok, boasts one of the largest land areas at 634.14 hectares and scored highly for green space quality. Only the University of Oxford (first) and the University of Cambridge (second) ranked higher.

Durham University achieved the highest green space score among all institutions in the top 10, contributing to its sixth-place ranking. Both universities are members of the prestigious Russell Group, which represents 24 leading UK research-intensive universities.

Benefits of Beautiful Campuses

Herman Barros, Director of UK Student Operations at Canvas Student, commented on the findings: "Studying in an aesthetically pleasing environment can significantly enhance the university experience. There’s something about walking through a campus that simply feels good - it elevates everything about student life and creates a sense of pride." He added that greenery, light, and well-designed spaces support wellbeing and foster community, noting that "courtyards, libraries, student accommodation: these are places where lifelong friendships are built."

However, Barros advised prospective students to prioritize their chosen course over visual appeal, stating: "While visual appeal is worth considering when applying, it’s important to prioritise the course you want to study, and that will define your future."

Context and Significance

The study comes as over 619,000 students prepare to attend university in September. For many, the decision on where to study involves not just academic offerings but also the overall university experience, including campus surroundings, green spaces, and local environment. The North East's strong showing highlights the region's appeal, with both universities offering impressive settings that complement their academic reputations.
