The Friends of High Borrans charity has expressed being "deeply saddened" by North Tyneside Council's decision to close the outdoor education centre in Cumbria, citing a £3 million maintenance backlog and declining school trip participation. The centre will shut by November 2026.
Financial Pressures and Declining Attendance
The council announced the closure on 30 June 2026, following a review that highlighted the site's financial unsustainability. The centre, owned by the council since 1967, requires significant investment to modernise, while attendance has dropped. Recent figures show only 1,255 pupils from Years 5 to 8 used the centre out of a potential cohort of 9,300.
The charity's statement noted: "For generations, High Borrans has provided life-changing outdoor learning experiences for thousands of young people. It has been far more than a residential centre; it has been a place where children and young people have developed confidence, resilience, independence, teamwork, leadership, and a lifelong appreciation of the natural environment."
Legacy and Hope for Reconsideration
The charity emphasised that the legacy of High Borrans will endure in the memories and achievements of the many young people whose futures were enriched there. They expressed hope that the council might reconsider the decision.
Rebecca Wall, Director of Children’s Services at North Tyneside Council, said: "The Council has taken the difficult decision to close High Borrans Outdoor Education Centre following a detailed review of its usage, costs and long-term sustainability. We know how valued the centre is and the important role it has played for many years. However, like councils across the country, we are facing significant financial pressures. The level of investment required to maintain and modernise the centre, alongside the ongoing subsidy needed to support each visit, means it is no longer financially viable."
Transition Support
Wall added that the council recognises the impact on dedicated staff and schools with existing bookings, and is committed to working closely with them to provide support and ensure a carefully managed transition.
