Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, a popular Welsh-medium secondary school in Cardiff, will increase its intake to up to 300 pupils for the 2027-28 academic year in response to a temporary surge in demand. The expansion, approved by Cardiff Council's cabinet on July 16, 2026, adds 60 places to the year seven cohort as a short-term measure.
Council Approval and Temporary Nature
A letter to parents explained that the cabinet considered the proposed changes, engagement responses, and recommendations before authorizing the temporary increase. The letter stated: “Cabinet noted the planned temporary increase to intakes at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf by 60 places for the 2027-28 school year and authorised officers to take the appropriate actions to allow for the increased intake to the school.” This measure is described as a response to a temporary increase in demand, with pupil numbers expected to return to lower levels in subsequent years.
Accommodation and Facilities Improvements
To support the larger cohort, Cardiff Council plans enhancements to dining and communal areas. The letter noted: “Detailed assessments have confirmed that the school site could accommodate a temporary increase in pupil numbers and a range of measures, including internal modifications and targeted improvements to facilities, will be implemented to support this.” These changes aim to alleviate accommodation pressures and maintain a positive learning environment.
Official Comments and Application Timeline
During the cabinet meeting, Cllr Sarah Merry, deputy leader and member for education, said: “In the medium term there are sufficient places within the education system but it is that one year that is a shortfall period.” The application process for year seven admissions in September 2027 opens on September 4 and closes on October 30, 2026.
