Stirling Councillors Call for More Support for Children with Additional Support Needs
Stirling Councillors Seek More Support for Children with Needs

Stirling councillors have unanimously passed a motion calling for major improvements in treatment targets for children with Additional Support Needs (ASN) and their families. The motion, supported at a recent meeting in Viewforth, specifically targets the Neurodevelopmental Disorders Service (NDD) operated by NHS Forth Valley, which currently has waiting lists for autism and ADHD assessments.

Motion Details and Requests

The motion, read during the meeting, noted the significant difficulties faced by children with ASN and their families. It acknowledged that NHS Forth Valley provides both Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and NDD services, both of which operate waiting lists. While recent improvements have cut CAMHS waits to meet the Scottish Government standard of 18 weeks, NDD service waits are not reported in the same transparent manner.

The council requested that Leader of Stirling Council, Councillor Susan McGill, write to the Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care. The letter seeks the introduction of transparent national reporting of autism and ADHD assessment waiting times for children and young people.

Support in Schools and Nurseries

The motion acknowledged the significant work currently underway in schools and nurseries to provide support to all children on their NDD journey, including those with a diagnosis and those waiting for an assessment. The support is tailored to each child's age and stage of development, with the aim of ensuring all children achieve their potential.

The council also noted that Stirling Council services provide support to children and families regardless of any formal diagnosis. Further supports required by children and families are an area of focus and are included in Stirling Council's current work plan and future Children Services Plan.

Briefing for Elected Members

Finally, the motion requested that a briefing be arranged for all elected members regarding CAMHS and NDD services, including support services in the Stirling Council area. This aims to ensure councillors are fully informed about the services and challenges faced by families.
