A pregnant woman is reconsidering her choice to name her daughter Honey after receiving widespread criticism that the name could hold the child back in life. The mother-to-be, who is English but lives overseas, shared her dilemma on Reddit, explaining that while she loves the unique name, almost everyone she has spoken to dislikes it.
Mother's Dilemma Over Unique Baby Name
The woman and her partner originally chose Honey for their baby girl because it “evokes softness, sweetness, warmth and golden sunshine.” She noted that their four-year-old son has strawberry blonde hair, and there is a strong chance their daughter will have a similar hair color, which further influenced their choice. However, after testing the name on friends and family, she found it to be highly divisive.
“I want to set my child up for success and having test driven the name on a few people, it's clear that it's quite divisive, and I would hate to give my child a name that would hold her back,” she wrote. She is now leaning toward using Honey as a middle name instead, allowing family to use it while giving her daughter the option to choose a more conventional first name later in life.
Mixed Reactions From Reddit Commenters
Commenters on the post were split. Some supported her decision to reconsider, while others defended the name. One commenter noted, “I know an attorney named Honey. She is successful and has not changed her name. No need. Adults adapt.” Another added, “I knew a Honey in college. She was brilliant. She went to a top law school and became a very successful lawyer. From what I could tell, her name never held her back.”
A third commenter suggested giving her a more conventional middle name as a backup, writing, “I think you can name her Honey if you give her a more conventional middle name that she can choose to use instead if she wishes to.”
Alternative Name Suggestions
The mother also asked for alternative names that evoke a similar vibe to Honey but are more widely accepted. Popular suggestions included Melina, which means honey, and flower-based names like Jasmine and Lily. The post has sparked a broader debate about the impact of unique names on a child's future success, with many commenters emphasizing that a name alone does not determine one's achievements.
