12-Year-Old Riley Townsend Takes Own Life After 3-Year Wait for Autism Diagnosis
Boy, 12, dies after three-year wait for autism diagnosis

The grieving mother of a 12-year-old boy has paid a heartbreaking tribute to her 'amazing' son, Riley Townsend, who took his own life after a failed three-year battle to secure a vital autism diagnosis.

A Family's Desperate Struggle for Support

Riley Townsend, from Sutton-in-Ashfield, was found hanged in his bedroom on 1 September 2024. His family had been desperately seeking an autism assessment for three years prior to his tragic death.

The young boy, a keen footballer for Kirkby Colts FC and Teversal FC, was diagnosed with ADHD in November 2021. However, his initial autism assessment around the same time was deemed 'inconclusive'. The court heard that a follow-up assessment could have been arranged if the family's concerns persisted, but Riley never received a formal autism diagnosis.

Warning Signs and a Cry for Help

An incident at school highlighted Riley's struggles. During a break, he pressed his tie against his throat until he nearly lost consciousness before a friend intervened.

When questioned by school staff about his behaviour, Riley explained that the pressure on his neck made him feel 'floaty'. Coroner Mr Paling told Nottingham Coroner’s Court that following this event, the possibility of a sensory issue was investigated.

The Search for Answers Continues

An inquest into Riley's death, led by coroner Amanda Bewley, is being held at Nottingham Coroner’s Court. The proceedings are examining the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy and were expected to conclude on Thursday, 27 November.

The coroner has indicated that it is most likely Riley did not intend the outcome of his actions, adding a further layer of profound sadness to an already devastating loss for his family and community.
