Seven parents from across Greater Manchester were fined at Manchester Magistrates Court on Friday (October 2) for their children's unauthorised school absences. The fines handed out varied, with some exceeding £1,000.
Fines and penalties for unauthorised absences
Parents taken to court for unauthorised school absences could face fines of up to £2,500, and may also be handed a community order or a jail sentence of up to three months. The court could also issue a Parenting Order.
Among those fined was Brendan Atkinson, of Bolton Road, Radcliffe, who pleaded guilty to taking his child out of school for an authorised holiday. He was ordered to pay a total of £493.
Details of individual cases
Anthony Firth, 36, of Kesteven Road, Harpurhey, was fined a total of £1,266 for his child's unauthorised school absence. Mr Firth did not attend the hearing.
Michaela Lakatos, of Bury Road, Radcliffe, pleaded guilty to taking her child out of school unauthorised and was fined a total of £283. Robert Lakatos, 31, also of Bury Road, Radcliffe, pleaded guilty to the same offence and was fined £283.
More parents fined in court
David Powell, of Masefield Road, Little Lever, Bolton, was fined a total of £958 for his child's unauthorised school absence. Mr Powell did not attend the hearing.
Natalie Rowe, of Bolton Road, Radcliffe, pleaded guilty to taking her child out of school for an unauthorised holiday and was ordered to pay £357. Rebecca Todd, 32, of Morris Street, Radcliffe, was fined £950 for her child's unauthorised school absence. Miss Todd did not attend the hearing.
