Hundreds of schools across the UK remain closed on Tuesday as snow and ice continue to cause disruption, with the Met Office extending weather warnings into Wednesday. The closures affect schools in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and northern England, including Shetland, Orkney, Aberdeenshire, Staffordshire, and North Yorkshire.
The UK experienced its coldest night of the year so far, with a temperature of -12.5°C recorded at Marham in Norfolk and -11.2°C in Dalwhinnie in the Scottish Highlands. An amber warning for snow remains in place for parts of north-east and northern Scotland until 7pm on Tuesday, with forecasts of 5-10cm of snow widely and up to 15cm in some areas.
Storm Goretti, the first named storm of the year, is expected to make landfall on Thursday, bringing further disruption. The Met Office has issued snow warnings for large parts of England and Wales from 6pm on Thursday, as a deep area of low pressure moves across the south of the UK, bringing rain, snow, and strong winds.
Travel conditions remain difficult, with road, air, and rail services affected. In Aberdeen, industrial diggers have been deployed to clear snow from main roads. ScotRail services between Aberdeen and Dundee are running, but National Rail warns of disruption across northern Scotland until the end of Tuesday. Loganair cancelled flights from Aberdeen, Inverness, Sumburgh, and Kirkwall airports on Monday.
