M56 closed after police incident between Chester and Runcorn

The M56 motorway between Chester and Runcorn has been closed since the early hours of Monday morning following a police incident, with the entire stretch cordoned off and diversions in place.

Closure details

The motorway was sealed off just after 1.30am on Monday due to the incident, which is affecting the eastbound carriageway between junction 14 for Chester Services and junction 12 for Runcorn. Several hours later, the road remains shut.

In its most recent update shortly before 6am, National Highways stated on X: "Update 3: M56 eastbound in Cheshire between J14 (Ellesmere Port) & J12 (Runcorn). - Remains closed for @cheshirepolice led incident collision investigations. - Currently no significant delays on approach."

Diversion routes

Travel service Inrix reported: "M56 Eastbound closed due to police incident from J14 A5117 (Chester Services / Helsby) to J12 A557 (Runcorn). Diversion - follow the solid diamond symbols via the A5117, A56 through Helsby and Frodsham, and the A557 to re-join the M56 at J12. Vehicles over 4.4m follow the X diversion symbols."

Police are carrying out an investigation this morning, and the road remains closed as the incident continues to be dealt with.
