David Wilson Homes Launches Search for Lanarkshire's Young Designers
David Wilson Homes Seeks Young Designers in Lanarkshire

David Wilson Homes has launched a search across Lanarkshire for the area’s most imaginative young designer through its new initiative, 'Built by Imagination'. The competition invites primary school pupils to reimagine how they would use the space inside a four-bedroom family home.

The firm, part of the UK’s largest housebuilder Barratt Redrow, has launched this search for the first time. It invites youngsters to put their creativity to the test this summer by redesigning a room inside one of its homes.

Competition Details

Children aged five to 12 are being asked to pick up their pencils and draw how they would transform the flexible dining room or study space inside its Glenbervie housetype. From a playroom to a home cinema, science lab or art studio, pupils are encouraged to let their imagination run wild and turn the space into whatever they can dream up.

Entries are open across two age categories: five to eight years and nine to 12 years. They will be judged on creativity and originality rather than artistic ability.

How to Enter

To enter, participants complete their design and submit a photograph alongside a short description explaining their vision. They can access floorplan designs on the website for inspiration. Standout entries will be brought to life using render image technology, giving young designers the chance to see their ideas transformed into a fully visualised room. The final winner will also receive a £150 Smyths Toys voucher.

Leading the judging is Alison Condie, the managing director of David Wilson Homes Scotland and the former technical director who oversaw the architectural, engineering and design processes required to turn new homes into reality.

Quotes from the Managing Director

Condie said: “Every David Wilson home is built around how families live, and that means giving them space that can grow and change with them. Our 'Built by Imagination' initiative puts that idea directly into the hands of children, who have a unique and instinctive sense of what makes a house feel like home.”

She added: “This is an invitation to Scotland’s young designers to show us what they would do with a room of their own. We expect the entries will tell us a great deal about what a family home really means to the next generation and may even inspire some of our future home designs.”

Prizes and Selection

Three regional winners will be selected from across the areas in which David Wilson Homes builds. Each will receive a £50 Smyths Toys voucher, with the overall winner receiving an additional £150 voucher. To enter, email barrattredrow@bigpartnership.co.uk, including your name, the name of the young person you are entering for, and their age.
