UAE Travel Advisory: FCDO Issues Warning Amid Regional Security Concerns

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a stark warning against all but essential travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), including popular destinations Dubai and Abu Dhabi. This advisory comes as regional tensions escalate, posing significant security risks that have already disrupted travel plans for many holidaymakers.

Current Security Situation and Travel Disruption

Following a series of strikes and the temporary closure of Middle Eastern airspace last month, flights to and from the UAE were grounded, causing severe travel disruption. While commercial flights from the UAE to the UK are gradually resuming, the situation remains volatile. The FCDO emphasizes that the Iranian regime has publicly stated its intention to target locations associated with the United States and Israel, including businesses, facilities, and institutions.

British nationals currently in the UAE have been advised to register their presence with authorities for updates. The FCDO warns people to stay away from areas around security or military facilities, as well as US or Israeli-linked locations. Iran continues to strike civilian infrastructure across the region, targeting ports, hotels, roads, bridges, energy facilities, financial institutions, oil production sites, water systems, and airports.

Safety Guidelines for Those in the UAE

The FCDO provides specific safety instructions for British nationals in the UAE:

  • Follow instructions from local authorities and monitor local and international media for updates
  • If advised to take shelter, stay indoors or move to the nearest safe building immediately
  • The greatest risk comes from falling debris caused by intercepts; interior stairwells or rooms with few external walls offer additional protection
  • Limit movements to essential journeys only
  • When travel is unavoidable, move during daylight hours, avoid crowded venues, keep mobile phones charged, and inform friends or family of your whereabouts
  • If away from home or hotel during an attack or alert, seek shelter in the closest building immediately

Travellers are also reminded that posting material online critical of the UAE government, companies, or individuals is illegal, following the arrest of a British man in Dubai for allegedly filming missiles.

Flight Status and Travel Options

Commercial flights to the UK from the UAE have resumed, but with significant restrictions. Dubai International Airport (DXB) confirms the gradual resumption of some flights to selected destinations, advising travellers not to come to the airport unless they have received confirmed departure times directly from their airline. Similarly, Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi restricts access to confirmed travellers only.

Emirates, the UAE flag carrier, is operating a reduced flight schedule following the partial reopening of regional airspace. Customers booked for travel between 28 February and 30 April will be rebooked on the next available Emirates flight in case of disruption. Under air passengers' rights rules, travellers are entitled to be flown to their destination as soon as possible on any available airline.

Departure Considerations and Cancellation Options

The FCDO advises that if your presence in the UAE is not essential, you may wish to consider departing if you can access options safely. Travel within or out of the UAE is at your own risk. British nationals attempting to leave via Saudi Arabia on emergency travel documents should contact the embassy in Riyadh or Jeddah for advice.

For those considering cancelling trips to the UAE, the FCDO's advice against all but essential travel may allow cancellation of package holidays without penalty for a full refund under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018. Travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice.

British embassies in Abu Dhabi and Dubai continue to operate normally, providing consular assistance to nationals in need. The situation remains fluid, with the FCDO urging constant vigilance and adherence to safety protocols while regional tensions persist.
