The Met Office has forecast rain in 88 UK counties on Wednesday, September 2, with downpours expected from early morning and peaking between 8am and 10am, just in time for the morning school run.
The forecast for Wednesday reads: "Showers or longer spells of rain will move eastwards across many central areas during the day. It will remain dry but cloudy in the far north and far southeast."
Rain band to sweep across the UK
Weather maps indicate a large band of rain sweeping over the UK from the west, initially hitting the western coast of Wales. It then moves north-east, soaking north Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia, and the North of England, where up to 16mm of rain will fall within an hour at 9am.
Scattered showers will follow, drenching Devon and Cornwall, before a second wave of rain appears in the afternoon to soak Northern Ireland and most of Scotland.
Temperatures and flood alerts
Despite the rain, temperatures will be warm, with highs of 23C in London, 21C in Cardiff and Manchester, 19C in Belfast, and 16C in Glasgow.
No weather warnings have been issued for Wednesday, despite the heavy rain, but the Environment Agency has put out flood alerts for a few waterways on Tuesday, September 1, which will be reviewed ahead of the midweek downpours.
Counties expected to see rain
The 88 UK counties predicted to experience rainfall on Wednesday include all six counties of Northern Ireland, 32 Scottish council areas, 22 Welsh counties, and 28 English counties spanning from Cornwall to Northumberland.
