A British actress who moved to Germany has described her culture shock at discovering that nudity is mandatory in German saunas. Livi, from Devon, shared her experiences on TikTok, saying the dress code 'would put most Brits into a coma'.
German travel website Staycation Collection explains that wearing swimwear in a sauna is considered unhygienic, and nudity is required. Saunas are described as 'strangely sexless places', and any inappropriate behaviour should be reported.
Livi also highlighted other surprises, including cigarette vending machines on streets and in bars, and alcohol vending machines. She noted the low cost of beer, with an average pint price of £3.87 compared to £5.50 in the UK.
She was also taken aback by the speed on the Autobahn, where drivers often exceed the advisory 130km/h limit. Other shocks included widespread Sunday closures and the 'Pfand' bottle deposit system, which adds €0.25 per bottle and can be redeemed for vouchers.
Commenters on her video shared mixed views, with some Brits finding Germans unfriendly, while Germans noted that they take time to warm up to new acquaintances.
