An Australian citizen is confirmed to be among the 115 people injured in a catastrophic fire that ripped through a popular bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana on New Year's Eve, claiming the lives of 40 individuals.
Government Confirms Casualty and Support
Australia's Climate Change and Energy Minister, Chris Bowen, publicly confirmed the news on Friday morning. He stated that the injured Australian was receiving medical care and that their family was being provided with consular assistance by the Australian government. "It's clearly a terrible, terrible tragedy and I'm sure all Australians send their condolences to the people of Switzerland, the people involved," Minister Bowen told ABC RN radio.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Dfat) echoed this, confirming it was providing support but citing privacy obligations for not releasing further details. Dfat is also making urgent inquiries with Swiss authorities to determine if any other Australians were affected by the incident.
Horrific Scene at Le Constellation Bar
Local police reported that the blaze erupted at around 1:30 am local time at Le Constellation bar, a venue frequented by tourists in the centre of the Valais resort. Video footage from the scene depicted orange flames bursting from the ground-floor establishment, with the sounds of screams and music audible in the background. Several people were seen collapsed outside the building in the immediate aftermath.
The fire's intensity was such that some victims have yet to be formally identified due to the severity of their burns. Swiss authorities have indicated that the fire was an accident and have ruled out arson as a cause.
