Manchester United have announced the signing of talented midfielder David Eze from Manchester City. The 16-year-old central midfielder has joined the club after leaving City, where he progressed through the academy system.
Second signing from City this week
Eze was formally unveiled just two days after United announced the signing of Karrim Cassim from City, with the Reds completing two signings from their rivals. Like Cassim, Eze was given a tour of Old Trafford upon signing.
United's statement confirming the move read: "Talented youngster David Eze has joined Manchester United. The central midfielder has joined the club after leaving Manchester City. The 16-year-old, who progressed through the academy system at City, has also been capped by England at youth level. Everyone wishes David the best of luck at United and welcomes him to the club."
Background and international caps
The Manchester Evening News reported in July that United were close to signing the youngster from City. It is understood that a pre-professional contract, outlining that he will sign with pro teams when he turns 17, has been included.
Eze had attracted interest from European clubs over the summer. He has a European passport because he was born in Dublin, which gave him options to move abroad, but he chose to sign for United. The prospect has represented England at Under-16 and Under-17 level.
Recruitment strategy
United's academy is essentially limited to a United Kingdom-based recruitment search due to Brexit rules, which is why the club have been proactive in adding players from neighbouring sides over the last few years.
