WRU Targets Cardiff Met's Daniel Milton for Coach Development Role
WRU Eyes Daniel Milton for Coach Development Role

The Welsh Rugby Union is looking to bring in Cardiff Metropolitan University's Daniel Milton to help nurture the next generation of rugby coaches. According to WalesOnline, the WRU is exploring the possibility of appointing Milton on a secondment basis, where he would operate within the rugby programme.

Replacing John Neal

The WRU has been seeking a replacement for former performance coach manager John Neal, who recently departed. If Milton secures the role, he will be tasked with ensuring a steady pipeline of quality coaches in Wales to lead both national and regional teams, with a focus on the men's and women's games.

Emphasis on Coach Development

WRU technical director Rhys Long is keen to prioritise coach development over the coming years, making this position crucial. Milton currently serves as a senior lecturer and researcher in Physical Education and Sport Coaching at the Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences. He previously headed rugby at Cardiff Met but stepped down two years ago, with Dai Young now overseeing the programme.

High Regard in Welsh Rugby

Milton is highly respected within Welsh rugby for his role in developing a top-tier rugby programme at Cardiff Met, which former England and Australia coach Eddie Jones once described as "a breeding ground for Test match rugby players." Wales star Aaron Wainwright and England international Alex Dombrandt emerged from the Cardiff Met system during Milton's tenure. He has also served as attack coach for the Wales U18s team.

In the coming years, there will be an increased focus on cultivating more elite Welsh coaches capable of operating at the highest level.
