Unexpected compliment tops list of little things that turn a bad day around

A study by electric vehicle charging provider Pod has found that small, regular rewards matter more than large one-offs for 80% of Brits. The research, which surveyed UK adults, revealed that an unexpected compliment can turn the day around for 84% of respondents.

Top mood boosters

Praise from strangers was the best mood booster, cited by 44% of those polled. Finally finishing something you have been putting off came second at 40%, while receiving an unexpected freebie or discount was third at 39%. Other mood boosters included getting a message from someone you have been meaning to catch up with (30%), a great song coming on at just the right moment (28%), being praised for making the right choice (24%), someone letting you go ahead in a queue (19%), waking up before your alarm and realising you have more time (18%), finding the perfect parking space (14%), and hitting a run of green lights (12%).

Daily routines and rewards

The study also found that 69% of Brits think every day routines would feel more satisfying if they came with a reward. In fact, 75% would welcome more rewards for tasks they already do, such as cleaning the house (40%), cooking the evening meal (30%), taking out the bins (21%), and keeping the car fuelled for the next day (14%).

Pod already rewards its customers for everyday tasks through Pod Rewards, which pays them for smart charging their EV overnight. To bring the findings to life, Pod sent comedian and internet personality Troy Hawke to praise people using an EV charger at home in his signature suave style. Hawke said: "It was a genuine joy surprising Pod customers on a beautiful day in the Southeast of England and reminding them what a wonderful and practical decision they made. It’s lovely celebrating people for any reason, why not for switching to home EV charging!"

EV charging insights

The research also explored how EV drivers feel about home charging after switching. 81% found it easier than expected, and almost all (98%) said it quickly became part of their routine. Melanie Lane, CEO of Pod, added: "We want electric living to feel simple; giving people confidence that they have made a choice that feels easy, more affordable and rewarding. Pod Rewards is not just about the cash customers earn for smart charging; it's also about the feeling that comes from trusting their decision and seeing that choice pay off every day. Bringing Troy to customers' doorsteps was our way of celebrating drivers who have made the switch and found that a simple everyday routine can be unexpectedly rewarding."
