Scratches and scuff marks on wooden floors can be removed in five minutes using a common kitchen item, according to a woodworker. The method uses a walnut to treat minor surface damage.
Wooden floors naturally show signs of wear from daily life, but during summer months they are particularly vulnerable to tiny scratches. The warmer weather brings increased airborne particles such as sand, pollen and plant debris, which drift indoors through open windows. While these microscopic particles may appear harmless, they are surprisingly abrasive, especially when trodden on with footwear, and can gradually damage a floor's wooden finish.
How a Walnut Removes Scratches
Brad Holden, a woodworker from Family Handyman, has revealed that one of the most straightforward methods for addressing scratches in wood requires nothing more than a walnut. He said: "Simply rub a walnut over a scratch in wood several times. Then, with your fingers, rub the scratched area. This will help the wood absorb the oil from the nut."
The natural oils in walnuts can penetrate shallow scratches, effectively filling them and making the marks considerably less visible. This technique helps darken the lighter scratch lines while creating a polishing effect that adds a subtle sheen. It is worth noting that while walnuts work brilliantly for minor surface damage, they will not remedy deep gouges or significant harm, as the method does not actually repair the flooring. Rather, it helps superficial scratches blend seamlessly into the surrounding wood.
Step-by-Step Guide to Using a Walnut
First, give the scratched spot a good vacuum or sweep before reaching for the walnut. Working on a grubby floor could embed dirt further into the timber and create additional scratches. If mopping, ensure the surface is bone-dry before attempting the walnut trick, otherwise you risk damaging the wood.
Then, simply grab a shelled walnut and gently rub the kernel over the damaged area. Take care to follow the grain of the wood rather than scrubbing vigorously. After you have finished, step back and give the treated floor about five minutes for the natural oils to work their way into the wood. Finally, take a fresh cloth and lightly polish the spot to clear away any remaining residue, and the scratches should become far less noticeable.
