Remove Mould from Silicone Sealant with White Vinegar
Remove Mould from Silicone Sealant with White Vinegar

Mould on shower silicone sealant can be effectively removed using a simple household item: white vinegar. Silicone sealant, the rubbery strip that prevents water from leaking, is prone to mould due to its porous nature and the damp bathroom environment. While bleach is a common mould killer, it only treats the surface and cannot penetrate deep into the silicone. Terry Alexander, a handyman and founder of The Plumbero, recommends white vinegar as a natural and effective alternative.

Why White Vinegar Works

White vinegar contains acetic acid, which dissolves mould spores without harsh chemicals. It is mild enough to use on silicone sealant without causing damage or discolouration, yet strong enough to penetrate and eliminate embedded spores.

Steps to Remove Mould Naturally

  1. Apply a generous amount of white vinegar directly onto the mouldy areas of the silicone sealant.
  2. Leave it undisturbed for at least one hour. For best results, leave it overnight to allow the vinegar to fully destroy the spores.
  3. Open a window to ventilate the bathroom, as white vinegar has a strong odour.
  4. After the waiting period, scrub the loosened mould with a bristled brush or an old toothbrush. It should lift off easily.
  5. Rinse the sealant thoroughly with warm water and dry it completely with a clean cloth to prevent future mould growth.

Enhancing the Cleaning Solution

Regular cleaning with white vinegar can prevent mould buildup. For a more powerful solution, mix white vinegar with baking soda and tea tree oil. This combination provides longer-lasting freshness and enhanced cleaning power.
