Christopher Hellenthal was driving home from a superhero-themed party in Jonesboro, Arkansas, when he spotted a man in a wheelchair struggling to cross six lanes of traffic. Still dressed as Spiderman, he did not hesitate to act.
Hellenthal, waiting at a light in his red Jeep, jumped out, ran over to the man and said, "I got you." He then rolled the wheelchair user safely across the crosswalk, just seconds before the light changed and traffic resumed.
Rescue caught on camera
The whole moment was captured by a street security camera and later posted on Facebook by the Jonesboro Police Department, who thanked Hellenthal for helping the man reach safety. The video soon went viral, collecting tens of thousands of likes.
Reflecting on the incident, Hellenthal said: "I had a bunch of adrenaline pumping through me. I was just kind of thinking, 'I'm wearing this suit; it's gonna be pretty funny.'" He added that he has "always been a Spiderman fan" and had to quickly get back to his Jeep because "the light turned green pretty fast."
"Not in my 7 years in the department have I witnessed this," said Sally Smith, a department spokesperson. Police did not identify the man in the wheelchair by name.
