Storing food correctly can significantly extend the freshness of groceries. Appropriate storage methods reduce wilting, moisture loss and deterioration, which also helps households cut costs.
Leafy vegetables like lettuce can prove especially tricky as they tend to become limp and discoloured rapidly. A recent TikTok clip reveals precisely how people in Britain should store their lettuce to extend its lifespan. According to the footage, using one specific method will keep the salad essential fresh for up to four weeks.
TikTok chef demonstrates foil method
In a TikTok video by @itscheffatty, who boasts over 480,000 followers, the chef demonstrated to viewers the proper technique for storing lettuce. He is seen wrapping a whole lettuce head in aluminium foil, meticulously covering it before placing it in the refrigerator. The completed parcel is securely wrapped, forming a protective barrier around the lettuce.
The food creator said: "Aluminum foil makes lettuce last up to four weeks in the fridge. Now there's a bit of science to this. You see, lettuce goes bad when it's exposed to ethylene gas, which is the gas produced when other things in the fridge are going bad, such as when there's too much moisture or too much light."
How the foil works
"The foil helps with all of it. It protects it from the gas quite a bit, protects it from moisture by allowing some gases to escape and blocks the light," he added.
Lettuce has a high water content, which explains why it can rapidly lose its crisp quality when kept in the refrigerator. Protecting it properly can help minimise both moisture loss and physical deterioration, which are key factors in leaves spoiling prematurely.
How to apply the technique
To employ this technique, begin with a fresh lettuce head, ensuring you don't rinse it beforehand. Next, wrap it thoroughly in foil before placing it in your refrigerator's crisper compartment.
Aluminium foil can similarly preserve other produce, including celery, broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, and cheese. Fresh herbs, baked potatoes, sweetcorn and bread rolls can also remain fresh for extended periods when tightly wrapped in foil.
Items to avoid wrapping in foil
However, avoid wrapping acidic or salty items directly in foil for lengthy durations. Products such as tomatoes, citrus fruits, pickles and heavily seasoned meals can interact with aluminium. For these items, opt for glass or food-safe plastic containers instead.
