DJ Spoony has shared how his friend Trevor Nelson is keeping upbeat amid his brain tumour diagnosis. The radio DJ, 62, took a break from his Radio 2 show and other work commitments earlier this year, with DJ Spoony stepping in for him temporarily to cover his show. Trevor has since spoken up to reveal he was diagnosed with a tumour and had "very serious" surgery.
Trevor's Diagnosis and Surgery
Speaking about his health, Trevor said: "There's been a lot of speculation as to what's wrong with me, I know that much. My phone's blown up 20 times over with people asking what's wrong with me. I was minding my own business and then it was discovered I had a brain tumour. As you can imagine, I was shocked. In fact, my world was turned upside down. Quite literally, my head was all over the place. I knew I had to stop work because I couldn't be that guy on the radio knowing I had that going on."
DJ Spoony's Support
DJ Spoony, who has been covering for Trevor during his absence, spoke to The Mirror following Trevor's break from work but before he announced that it had been a brain tumour he was battling. Speaking about his friend to The Mirror, he said: "He's very positive as he always is, that doesn't surprise me in any way. He's still fanatical about his golf, and I'm sure that's one of the things that's keeping him upbeat, going to shoot a par as soon as he can! I have no doubt that he'll listen to some good music. I might have to steer him towards my Breakfast Club playlist actually!"
Hoping for a Return
For now, DJ Spoony has Trevor's radio slot but he is looking forward to the day that Trevor returns, something which the radio legend is hoping to do very soon. "I'm hoping that he's able to come back to work as soon as possible. I feel that myself and the audience have really connected whilst I'm keeping the seat warm for Trevor," he said. "We get to play some amazing music in the daytime on Radio 2, which is often quite different to what you typically might hear, so in that way, to really get behind the music, I'm kind of taking the baton from Trevor because we both love a lot of the similar kind of music. But I'm hoping he's able to come and take the baton back from me to take his rightful position in his slot very soon."
Trevor made the shock announcement earlier this year. He wrote on Instagram this summer: "I wanted to let my followers, radio listeners and all my Soul Nation party-people know that I'm going to be taking a little break from my work commitments. Some of you may already have noticed that I've not been on my daily Radio 2 slot this week. After a routine check-up I was advised to have some follow up tests. As a result, I will be taking some further time off."
