Simple Spice Solution to Banish Bin Pests
A social media life hacks expert claims that sprinkling two common kitchen spices into the bottom of your bin can help keep flies and maggots at bay throughout the summer. The man, who runs an Instagram account under the name "dad hacks," shared a video suggesting that placing cayenne pepper and cinnamon in your bin could mean you "never deal with flies or maggots again," according to the Mirror.
Warm temperatures and humid conditions provide an ideal environment for insects to thrive, with flies often being the worst offenders. Flies are attracted to decomposing food and waste commonly found in wheelie bins, and just a few flies laying eggs can lead to a bin overrun with maggots.
How the Spices Work
The expert explained: "The capsaicin in the cayenne pepper irritates the fly's senses and drives them away. The cinnamon stops them from laying eggs altogether." Capsaicin is the pungent chemical in chilli peppers that gives them their hot flavour, and its intense smell overpowers a fly's sense of smell. Contact with cayenne pepper can also irritate a fly's delicate feet, causing them to retreat. Cinnamon works similarly, overwhelming a fly's senses through its strong natural oils, which are naturally harmful to insects and can interfere with their nervous systems.
How to Apply the Hack
To use this method, simply sprinkle both cayenne pepper and cinnamon into the base of your wheelie bin, kitchen bin, food waste caddy, or any other area that attracts flies. Then insert your bin liner as usual and add fresh spices each time you change the liner.
Additional Tips to Keep Flies Out
There are numerous natural remedies to deter flies. Certain natural scents are widely recognised for repelling insects, so placing them around your home can be effective. Maintaining a clean living space is also crucial: always cover food on kitchen worktops and use a firmly sealed food waste bin. If your local authority hasn't introduced food waste bins, biodegradable food waste bags offer an excellent solution—just seal the bag and place it in your regular household rubbish.
