A heavy metal concert in Dunedin, New Zealand, was brought to a squelching halt on Saturday night after a fan defecated in the mosh pit, leaving attendees vomiting and horrified.
The incident occurred during a performance by Kiwi band Devilskin at the Union Hall. Witnesses said the band was a few songs in when the smell and mess were discovered.
Witness accounts
Damian Radburnd told Stuff that his fiancée smelled it before they realized what had happened. "The guy who was directly in front of me proceeded to shake a log down his leg," he said. The man then tried to kick it away and stepped in it. Radburnd alerted security, and lead singer Jennie Skulander initially halted the show thinking someone was sick. Radburnd said he "proceeded to demonstrate the act so that Devilskin understood what had happened."
Another concertgoer told the Otago Daily Times that the mess was spread by enthusiastic dancing. "It's on people's feet. People are wearing skirts and s**t is up their legs and stuff, and then one girl went bleh — just vomited on the s**t — and then everyone else starts vomiting." She described the deposit as "huge," saying she "hadn't seen one that big before."
Aftermath and response
The concert was paused while staff cleaned up. Attendees in the foyer were hysterical, with one woman covered in vomit and feces. Once the gig resumed, a large empty circle was left near the stage. Band Devilskin later posted a mocked-up ad for a "Diaper of Doom" nappy on Instagram.
The Otago University Students’ Association (OUSA), which operates the venue, said it was "an unfortunate medical incident." OUSA president Daniel Leamy stated: "The individual involved remained fully clothed throughout, and this was in no way a deliberate 'code brown' situation. They were willingly escorted from the venue by security." Police confirmed no arrests were made.
