Dust accumulation on blinds and window sills can be a persistent problem, but an expert has shared a simple solution using tumble dryer sheets. John Anderton from Stylux Blinds said the anti-static properties of these sheets can repel dust for weeks, often up to a month.
How tumble dryer sheets work
Blinds and window sills are prone to dust because the materials generate static electricity that attracts dust. Tumble dryer sheets are designed to eliminate static in laundry, and the same effect works on household surfaces. Anderton explained: "Inexpensive tumble dryer sheets will make a good job of cleaning wooden, vinyl, or metal blinds."
He added: "The dryer sheet will pick up the dust as you go, rather than redistributing it around the room, and remove static at the same time. This means that further dust isn't attracted back to the blind as quickly."
The sheets not only remove static but also leave a fine layer of residue that acts as a protective coating, preventing dust from clinging.
Cost and usage
A pack of 34 Lenor tumble dryer sheets costs about £3, making each sheet approximately 9p. To use, simply wipe the blind or windowsill with a dryer sheet, replacing it if heavily soiled. For stubborn dust, a small amount of warm water and washing-up liquid can be used first. After cleaning, finish with a fresh dryer sheet to apply the anti-static layer.
The anti-static effect typically lasts at least a week, and can keep dust away for up to a month, depending on how often windows are opened.
