Dog trainer shares tips to calm a wild cockapoo easily, says it's not hard
Dog trainer's simple tips to calm a wild cockapoo

Cockapoos are popular but can be challenging. Dog trainer John from Aspire Dog Training says owners often get it wrong. With proper exercise and mental stimulation, even the most boisterous pooch can be calm all day.

Training approach

John explains that cockapoos are a mix of two working breeds: cocker spaniel and poodle, both highly intelligent. In a TikTok video, he addressed owner complaints about separation anxiety, pinching socks, and following around. His own cockapoo Woody is not a 'nutter', achieved through straightforward training methods. 'What you've got to remember is, a cockapoo is a mix of two working breeds, two working dogs,' he said. He emphasized that cockapoos need breed-specific activities like scent work, tracking, and gundog training. He walks Woody for an hour to an hour and a half in the morning, then the dog is chill all day, with another walk in the evening.

John noted that many people get cockapoos expecting a teddy bear that just cuddles. While they are affectionate, they need the other stuff to avoid being a pain.

Tips for training a cockapoo

Pooch & Mutt outline these training tips:

  • Be positive and give praise. Reward good behaviour with treats. Cockapoos identify tones in voice.
  • Provide mental stimulation like puzzle toys.
  • Practice recall in busy environments.
  • Incorporate grooming into routine with rewards.
  • Teach simple tricks.
  • Compete in dog sports like agility.
  • Socialise early with people and other animals.
  • Be patient with separation anxiety, gradually increasing alone time with toys.

Wrapping up, John said: 'If you're a cockapoo owner and you're having these challenges, it doesn't have to be like that, I promise you that.'
