Teachers at Liverpool School to Strike Over Broken Promises and Workload
Liverpool Teachers Strike Over Broken Promises and Workload

Teachers and staff at St Margaret's Church of England Academy in Aigburth, Liverpool, are set to walk out on strike over concerns about working conditions, excessive workload, and broken promises, according to the National Education Union (NEU).

Strike Ballot Results and Dates

Following a ballot in which 97% of NEU members voted for industrial action, the union announced that teachers will strike on July 15, with further strike days planned for September. The NEU said staff have been left with no alternative after repeated attempts to resolve concerns with the All Saints Multi Academy Trust (ASMAT), which runs the school.

Reasons for Industrial Action

The NEU cited excessive workload, adverse management practices, and a lack of meaningful engagement from the trust. Jenny McLoughlin, NEU regional officer, stated: "Our members want every student to have the opportunity to thrive in a safe, well-supported school. That means ensuring staff have the time, support and working conditions they need to deliver the high-quality education every child deserves. We have been trying to resolve these concerns through negotiations with All Saints Academy Trust, but we have been met with broken promises and a lack of meaningful engagement. Industrial action is always a last resort, but our members believe change is needed for the benefit of both staff and students."

Trust Response

A spokesperson for All Saints Multi Academy Trust said: "The National Education Union has informed the Trust that its members at St Margaret’s Church of England Academy intend to take industrial action on 15 July. All Saints Multi Academy Trust is focused on ensuring continuity of education for students at the school and maintaining normal operations wherever possible. While we respect the rights of employees to take lawful industrial action, appropriate plans will be put in place should action go ahead to minimise any disruption to the school day. Parents and carers will be informed directly and promptly of any confirmed changes to arrangements."

Impact on Students and Parents

The trust confirmed it will implement plans to minimise disruption, and parents will be notified of any changes. The strike comes amid ongoing concerns about staff wellbeing and its impact on students' education.
