Housekeeper's 60p Tip to Keep Towels Soft and Fluffy
Housekeeper's 60p Tip for Soft Towels

A housekeeper has revealed a simple and inexpensive method to keep towels soft and fluffy, using a common household staple that costs as little as 60 pence.

Why Towels Become Scratchy

Towels often lose their plushness due to the buildup of detergent residues and body oils within the fibers. Tumble drying can also contribute to stiffness. Fortunately, this issue can be easily remedied.

The Housekeeper's Secret: White Vinegar

Jennifer Reynolds, a professional housekeeper, shared her advice on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group. She explained that the key to maintaining soft towels, especially white ones, is to add white vinegar during an extra rinse cycle after washing. The acetic acid in white vinegar breaks down detergent and fabric softener residues, while also eliminating musty odors.

To use white vinegar effectively, avoid pouring it directly into the washing machine drum, as it may damage rubber and plastic components. Instead, add a small amount to the pre-rinse compartment of the detergent drawer. Alternatively, towels can be pre-soaked in a vinegar solution before washing.

Jennifer also emphasized that she never uses fabric softener on towels, which helps keep them soft and fluffy. After washing, she recommends shaking the towels vigorously to restore the cotton fibers and aid drying.

White vinegar is widely available and affordable, with prices starting at around 60p at supermarkets like Tesco, or about £1 for a larger bottle at Home Bargains. Many cleaning enthusiasts in the group praised the eco-friendly product, which also helps tackle limescale and maintain washing machines.
