Mohammed Umar Khan, 15, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years for the murder of Harvey Willgoose, also 15, at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield. The attack occurred on 3 February during a lunchbreak, when Khan stabbed Harvey twice in the chest with a 13cm hunting knife. One of the blows penetrated his ribs and struck his heart.
The judge, Mrs Justice Naomi Ellenbogen, lifted an anonymity order previously protecting Khan's identity due to his age, stating that the public had a right to know the identity of those who commit such serious offences. During sentencing, the judge rejected claims of self-defence, saying Khan acted out of hurt and anger over what he perceived as Harvey's betrayal of their friendship. Khan showed no emotion or remorse as the sentence was read.
The court heard that Harvey and Khan were part of conflicting friendship groups, and the dispute began over a school lockdown triggered by Khan reporting another student with a knife, followed by a social media argument. CCTV footage showed Khan pushing Harvey in corridors and later producing the knife. Witnesses described students fleeing in fear and panic, with some locking themselves in cupboards.
Khan's defence barrister, Gul Nawaz Hussain KC, argued that Khan had been bullied for years and 'snapped' after an intense period of fear, but acknowledged the crime was inexcusable. The court also heard that Khan had searched for weaponry online and posed with knives in photos on his phone. After the stabbing, Khan told the headteacher, 'I'm not right in the head' and 'you know I can't control it'.
Harvey's family, who attended the sentencing, have since campaigned against knife crime and established a youth club in his memory. His sister Sophie told the court that Khan 'didn't just end Harvey's life, he ended ours too'. The school stated it had engaged fully with investigations into the tragedy.
