Prince Julian, the five-year-old son of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden, sparked concern after appearing in a blue plaster cast in the royal family's annual summer portrait. The image, released on social media to mark the start of the summer season, was taken during the celebrations for Crown Princess Victoria's 49th birthday on July 14, 2026, at Solliden Palace on the island of Öland.
Royal Spokesperson Confirms Minor Injury
Margareta Thorgren, director of communications for the Swedish royal court, addressed the injury, stating: “Nothing more than a bit of rough and tumble is to blame. Children and play, things that can happen.” She confirmed that Julian had suffered a “small crack” on his arm, but emphasized there was no cause for concern.
Birthday Celebrations and Traditions
The birthday festivities began in the afternoon when Crown Princess Victoria gathered with her family in front of Solliden Palace. She then traveled in a procession to the Borgholm Castle ruins to attend the Victoria Concert, a tradition dating back to 1979. This year, cross-country skier Frida Karlsson was awarded the Victoria Prize by the Crown Princess. A total of 21 gun salutes were fired in Stockholm, Karlskrona, Gothenburg, and Härnösand, as well as from a mobile salute battery in Boden.
The royal family portrait featured King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip with Princess Sofia, Princess Madeleine with her husband Chris O’Neill, and their children. Prince Julian's brothers, Prince Alexander (10) and Prince Gabriel (8), were also present, all wearing matching green jackets.
