Fuse Cinema, a community cinema in Prudhoe, Northumberland, has closed after 12 years of operation. The decision was made by Northumberland County Council, which is repurposing the Fuse Media Centre on Moor Road for children with additional needs. The cinema announced the closure on social media, stating it would be closed 'for the foreseeable future' due to loss of access to the premises.
Background and impact
Since opening in 2014, Fuse Cinema has been a hub for the local community, offering films and shared experiences. The council's decision to close the media centre was based on plans to convert the building into a base for school-age learners with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Councillor Guy Renner-Thompson explained that the move aims to better meet the needs of pupils with additional needs in the west of Northumberland, stating it 'is not a good use of public money keeping a building open for a small class once a week.'
Community reaction and future plans
The cinema's statement expressed gratitude to customers, volunteers, partners, and supporters, emphasizing that cinema is about more than films—it brings people together. The closure is seen as a 'pause' rather than a goodbye, with hopes for future opportunities. The council has been working with schools in Prudhoe, Hexham, and Haydon Bridge to develop Specialist Support Bases, and the Fuse Media Centre is a candidate for such use.
