Tragedy in St Petersburg as Teen Allegedly Murders Mother
A 13-year-old schoolgirl in St Petersburg, Russia, has been accused of the brutal murder of her own mother, 46-year-old Svetlana Cheglyakova. The alleged motive stemmed from a dispute over the teenager's social media use, after her mother confiscated her mobile phone.
A Fatal Dispute Over Online Obsession
According to law enforcement reports, the incident unfolded after Svetlana Cheglyakova confiscated her daughter's phone following a bitter argument about the girl's alleged obsession with being online. The confrontation escalated on the night of the crime. The teenager claimed her mother saw she was still awake, yelled at her, and slapped her.
During subsequent questioning, the girl admitted to grabbing a knife and stabbing her mother in the neck. She also accused her late mother of "not letting her hang out with friends" and of "constantly bullying her," closely monitoring her every move.
A Staged Crime Scene and Online Role-Play
Following the attack, the teenager allegedly slit her own hands and then set fire to the family's flat in an attempt to cover her tracks. She initially told investigators that an intruder had broken in, killed her mother, wounded her, and started the fire.
However, authorities became suspicious. A report from crime channel 112 suggested the girl's actions may have been influenced by online role-playing games, such as Roblox, which featured on her TikTok streams. The report stated, "The schoolgirl's actions do not resemble standard gameplay," citing instances where her in-game character danced in a burning room and carried an injured player.
Law enforcement now suspects she was "simulating the murder of her own mother and the subsequent attempt to cover up the crime." The girl, who was from a single-parent family, is currently in hospital receiving treatment for her self-inflicted injuries.
Legal Consequences and a Family Destroyed
The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case for murder. However, in a tragic legal twist, the 13-year-old suspect cannot face trial due to being below the age of criminal responsibility in Russia.
This devastating case highlights the extreme and tragic outcomes that can arise from conflicts over technology use, online addiction, and family dynamics, leaving a community in shock and a young life irrevocably damaged.
