Danny the greyhound, known as Britain's 'loneliest dog', has finally been adopted after spending 550 days at Battersea's Old Windsor Centre. The average stay for dogs at the centre is just 38 days, making Danny's wait exceptional.
Staff efforts and misconceptions
During his 18-month stay, staff organised birthday parties and a Valentine's Day photoshoot to keep Danny's spirits up. Battersea experts believe misconceptions about greyhounds' energy levels and exercise needs contributed to his long wait.
A new home
His new owner saw Danny on the shelter's Instagram page and felt an instant connection. 'From the moment we met him, there was something incredibly special about him and we just knew that we would be his forever family,' they said. 'Despite spending such a long time waiting for a home, he has settled in far more quickly than we ever expected.'
Adjusting to the outside world
After a foster home placement to prepare him, Danny now enjoys exploring the garden, lounging around the house, and following his new family. 'Watching him relax, sleep deeply and grow in confidence each day has been incredibly rewarding,' his owner added.
Battersea's reaction
Zenya Green, Rehoming Team Leader at Battersea Old Windsor, said: 'It was heartbreaking to see such a sweet boy overlooked time and time again. Watching him head off to his forever home after more than 500 days with us was incredibly special and the true happy ending we were all hoping for.'
Encouraging rescue adoption
In 2025, Battersea cared for over 3,500 dogs and cats across three centres. Danny's owner hopes his story encourages others to consider rescue dogs: 'We feel very lucky to have found him, and we hope that his story encourages others to consider giving a rescue dog a chance.'
