The heartbroken family of a nine-year-old girl stabbed to death in a quiet Somerset town have described her as "the most beautiful little soul" as a teenage boy appeared in court charged with her murder.
A Life Cut Short in Weston-super-Mare
Aria Thorpe died from a single stab wound at a property on Lime Close in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, on Monday evening. Emergency services were called to the scene just before 6.10pm, but the young girl was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
In a moving tribute released on Friday, Aria's family on her mother's side remembered a child who was "happy-go-lucky, full of light, and joy". They said she loved to sing and dance and took pride in dressing up, always wanting to look like her mother.
"The loss of Aria has devastated us beyond words," the family statement continued. "Our hearts are broken in a way we never imagined possible. We are holding one another close and doing everything we can to support each other through this unimaginable time."
Court Appearance and Family Tributes
A 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons due to his age, appeared at Bristol Crown Court on Friday charged with Aria's murder. The defendant appeared via video link from youth detention accommodation and spoke only to confirm his name. He did not enter a plea.
Judge Blair KC, the Recorder of Bristol, set a provisional trial date for 15 June 2025 during the brief hearing. The teenager's father was among those in the public gallery. The accused is next scheduled to appear in court on 16 March.
In a separate, deeply personal tribute, Aria's father, Tom Thorpe, who lives in Portsmouth, shared his grief. "It's hard to put into words how devastating it is, our little Aria, that you're up there with the angels looking over us," he said.
He recalled cherished memories of their time together, including a family trip to Disneyland. "Seeing your face light up when we were watching the princess show was a picture that will last for ever in our minds," Mr Thorpe said. He described his daughter as a "brave, kind-hearted and a beautiful innocent soul" who could easily show affection and ensure others were happy.
Police Investigation and Community Shock
Shortly after the incident on Monday, police arrested a 15-year-old boy in the nearby area of Worle. He was taken into custody before being charged.
The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the local community in Weston-super-Mare. Aria's family expressed gratitude for the supportive messages they have received from friends and neighbours in recent days, saying it had "meant an awful lot".
As the legal process begins, a family is left to mourn a vibrant young life ended far too soon. Aria's father poignantly added: "A life gone far too early but I hope a life lived well. We all love you dearly."
