A 17-year-old girl died after falling from a truck trailer during World Cup celebrations in the French town of Aulnoye-Aymeries early on July 10, 2026. The tragedy occurred shortly after France defeated Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Details of the Incident
The girl had climbed onto a trailer attached to a tractor-truck along with several others who had attended a private watch party. As the vehicle began moving, she fell from the trailer and was struck by the truck. French publications reported that she "fell and was run over."
The incident took place around 12:30 a.m. in the town centre. Emergency services arrived quickly, but the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Some other individuals were taken to hospital, but their conditions were not believed to be serious.
Arrest and Investigation
Local police arrested the 45-year-old truck driver on suspicion of "road homicide," according to French newspaper La Voix Du Nord. The driver was taken into custody as an investigation was launched into the tragedy.
Laurent Dumaine, the Public Prosecutor, stated: "The truck driver and some of his guests wanted to celebrate the victory of the French football team. They got into the cab of the vehicle and headed towards the town centre of Aulnoye-Aymeries, where the population density limited their progress."
Context and Related Incidents
France's victory propelled them to the semi-finals of the World Cup. Meanwhile, in London, a police officer was injured and four people were arrested for violent disorder after Morocco's exit from the tournament. The Metropolitan Police reported that the officer was hit by a glass bottle on Edgware Road and taken to hospital with a head injury.
