A woman who initially thought her new neighbour was merely irritating due to the noise he made soon discovered the situation was far worse. The neighbour, a man in his fifties, moved into the flat below her and began spending most of his time on his balcony, engaging in activities that disrupted her daily life and sleep.
Neighbour's Balcony Lifestyle Causes Distress
The woman, who moved into the upper floor of an old two-story apartment building two months ago, shared her experience on Reddit. She described how the neighbour kitted out his balcony with new furniture and started living there, sitting in his underwear, chain smoking, watching videos with the speaker on, and making long video calls, sometimes after midnight. She believes he speaks a Slavic language and assumes no one understands him, so he does not lower his voice.
She wrote: 'Both my living room and bedroom are directly above his balcony, and even with the windows closed, it sounds like he's literally inside my apartment when he talks.' She tried using headphones or turning on the TV, but the situation worsened.
Early Morning Spitting Wakes Her Up
In recent days, the neighbour began smoking on the balcony around 4am while constantly clearing his throat and spitting loudly. She said: 'He really spits every 5 seconds. It's disturbing noise wakes me up each time and also it's also very disgusting.' This has left her exhausted, with only three hours of sleep before work.
The woman admitted she does not want to confront the neighbour directly, as he 'doesn't seem like a very considerate person'. She also has not approached the apartment manager, suspecting they 'probably won't care'. Instead, she is considering leaving a message on his door, joking that if that fails, she has no other options.
Reddit Community Offers Solutions
The post resonated with the Reddit community, garnering over 1,000 upvotes and numerous replies. One user suggested playing loud music on her balcony during his video calls, while another recounted using Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song' at full volume to deter a similar neighbour. A different user recommended recording the noise and playing it back to the neighbour and landlord, especially the late-night calls and spitting. Another tip involved hanging bird feeders outside her windows to attract birds, which could create a mess below the neighbour's balcony.
This incident follows another homeowner's complaint about a neighbour drilling into their property without permission, with police reportedly taking no action.
