Woman dies, girl critical after train hits car in Lancashire

A woman has died and an eight-year-old girl is in a critical condition after a train hit their car at a level crossing in Lancashire. British Transport Police (BTP) were called to the scene on Station Road in Hoghton, near Bamber Bridge and Preston, at 8:50am on June 25. Paramedics and fire crews also attended.

Victims and Response

BTP confirmed the driver was a woman who died at the scene. The girl was taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital with life-threatening injuries. No passengers on the train were injured. BTP Superintendent Jamie McGowan said: “Today’s events are truly devastating, and our thoughts are firmly with the family of the woman who sadly lost her life and the young girl in hospital with serious injuries. Members of their family are being supported by specially trained officers.”

Investigation Underway

Detectives remain at the scene working with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB). McGowan urged witnesses to contact BTP by texting 61016, quoting reference 152 of 25 June. Photos show a green tarpaulin covering car wreckage near the tracks, with debris scattered around.

Travel Disruption

Train services between Preston and Blackburn remain suspended for the rest of the day. Northern issued a “do not travel” warning and advised passengers to use alternative routes via Bolton, Manchester, or local buses. Northern said: “Due to a level crossing incident near to Bamber Bridge, no trains are running between Preston and Blackburn until further notice. Please do not attempt to travel between these stations today, June 25.”

A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “Several clinical teams attended the scene, including our hazardous area response team and two air ambulances. Sadly, a child has sustained life-threatening injuries and has been taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for further treatment.”

South Ribble Police advised motorists to avoid the area. Local bus routes 23, 45, 113, 124, and 152 are available as alternatives.
